The Phantom confronts Swan who recognizes him as Winslow. He then terrorizes Swan and his musicians and nearly kills The Beach Bums (the former The Juicy Fruits, who have traded doo-wop for surf music). With his face severely mutilated, a disoriented Winslow sneaks into the Paradise costume department and dons a long, black cape and a silver, owl-like mask, becoming the Phantom of the Paradise. A guard catches him, and the record press crushes and burns his face and destroys his vocal cords. Winslow escapes prison in a delivery box and breaks into the Death Records building where he destroys a record press. Six months later, Winslow hears that The Juicy Fruits, whom he hates, have made an anticipated hit record of his music with Swans backing. Winslows teeth are extracted and replaced with shiny metal ones as part of an experimental prisoner program funded by the Swan Foundation. Winslow is given a life sentence in Sing Sing Prison. Double crossed by Swan who hires heavy metal singer Beef, Leach exacts his vengeance. Leach signs contract with Swan to complete rock opera based on the life of Faust for Phoenix. Disfigured Leach plans revenge on Swan and his rock palace, The Paradise, and becomes The Phantom. Record producer Swan steals both the music and the girl (Phoenix) from composer Leach. Rock Opera version of Phantom Of The Opera with elements of Faust. Over the years, the film has received much more positive reviews and has since become a cult classic. Initially, the film was a box office failure and revived negative reviews, however it earned praise for its music, with received an Academy Award and a Golden Globe nomination. The story is a loosely adapted mixture of several classic European works: Gaston Lerouxs novel The Phantom of the Opera, Oscar Wildes The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Faust by Goethe/Christopher Marlowe. Betrayed, the composer dons a new appearance and exacts revenge on the producer. However, a record producer betrays him and steals his music to open his rock palace, The Paradise. In the film, a disfigured composer writes his music for a woman he loves so that she will perform his music.
